LOCAL ROUTE GROWTH
Growing within our community.
Our local route growth approach: North Kildonan, East Kildonan and Southland Park.
Our local route growth approach.
One of the approaches that has driven the growth of Karen's Snow & Mow Inc. has been our decision to concentrate our services within the communities where we live and work, particularly North Kildonan, East Kildonan and Southland Park.
Rather than expanding by simply taking customers anywhere in Winnipeg, we have focused on developing strong, efficient neighbourhood routes. As we gain customers on a street or within an area, we can serve additional nearby properties without significantly increasing travel time, fuel consumption or operating costs.
This approach has allowed us to grow while still providing the personal service of a small, family-operated company.
Impact on our customers.
For our customers, the biggest impact has been reliability and familiarity. Because our routes are concentrated, we spend less time travelling across the city and more time actually servicing properties.
This is especially important during Winnipeg snowstorms. Being close to our customers allows us to respond efficiently and provide thorough service, including driveways, walkways, steps, entrances, boulevard paths, drifting snow and windrows left by City plows.
Customers also know who is coming onto their property. They deal directly with us rather than an ever-changing group of employees or contractors. Over time, we learn each property and understand what individual customers need.
That has helped turn many customer relationships into long-term relationships built on trust.
Impact on our business.
For us, the concentrated-route approach has made growth more sustainable.
Reducing unnecessary driving lowers fuel use, vehicle wear and unproductive travel time. It allows our equipment and labour to be used more efficiently and makes it possible to serve more customers without sacrificing the quality of our work.
It has also allowed one service to lead naturally into another. A customer who first hires us for lawn care may later need aeration, overseeding, shrub grooming, planting, landscaping or snow clearing. Likewise, a snow customer may eventually become a summer customer.
As those relationships have developed, Karen's Snow & Mow has evolved from primarily providing lawn and snow services into a broader year-round property-care business, including our newer commercial indoor plant leasing and maintenance services.
Impact on us personally.
The approach has allowed us to build a business around our own community rather than spending our working days travelling from one end of Winnipeg to another.
It has also given us something more valuable than simply increasing sales: a reputation that belongs to us personally.
Because we perform the work ourselves and interact directly with our customers, the quality of the service reflects directly on Karen's Snow & Mow. That creates accountability, but it has also created tremendous pride in what we have built since 2013.
Growth has come largely through doing good work, being dependable and allowing our reputation and customer relationships to create further opportunities.
Impact on the community.
Keeping our routes local also means that our growth strengthens the neighbourhoods we serve.
Our services help homeowners maintain attractive properties, assist seniors and people who may have difficulty performing physically demanding yard or snow work, and help keep sidewalks, entrances and driveways safer during winter.
There is also an environmental and neighbourhood benefit to operating concentrated routes. Less driving between customers means less fuel consumption and fewer unnecessary vehicle kilometres.
Most importantly, our customers are supporting a business that is part of their community.
We live here. We work here. We serve our neighbours here.
Our growth strategy has shown us that a small business does not necessarily have to become less personal as it becomes more successful. By growing within our community rather than simply growing beyond it, Karen's Snow & Mow Inc. has been able to become more efficient, expand its services and increase its customer base while preserving the relationships and dependable service on which the company was founded.
